Marianne was built according to Jarl Lindblom’s drawings and completed at the Turku Boatyard during the interim peace in the spring of 1941. Marianne has a length of 9.11 meters and a beam of 1.94 meters, with a sail area of 22.41 square meters.
Marianne was built from Gran-Bassam mahogany. The deck was made of Oregon pine, while mahogany was chosen for the gunwale, the king plank and the cockpit cladding. The mast, the main boom and the spinnaker boom were made of silver spruce. The hull and deck were varnished. The topsides were decorated with a gold stripe, the name of the yacht in gold lettering, and carvings with bird motifs.
Because of the continuation war, Marianne was unable to compete for any 5m class prizes until 1945. After the war, the yacht got its chance when it was chosen to represent Finland in the races for The International Five Meter Cup. Unfortunately, in the war years Five-meter design had developed greatly in Sweden. Thus, the Tore Holm design Sunny defeated Marianne in the trophy competition.
Marianne was actively involved in 5m class sailing in Turku. In 1950 Marianne participated in the Gråhara Regatta in Helsinki and later in the Hanko Regatta. As the interest of Gilbert von Rettig in the early 1950s turned to the 5.5m class, Marianne was put on the market. The buyer, Nils Lindberg, was found in the Turku area. However, the popularity of the 5m-class began to decline rapidly during the 1950s and competition was reduced to a minimum. Many 5m yachts were converted to cruisers, and Marianne was also fitted with a cabin. In the early 1960s, Marianne changed hands again. Jaakko Rantanen registered the yacht in Turun Pursiseura (Turku Yacht Club) and used her for holiday cruising in the Turku Archipelago with his family.
Marianne had a further three owners after Rantanen, until the yacht was acquired by Joakim Håkans in 2019 and transferred to the Turku Boatyard in September 2019 as part of the Classic boat fleet at the Ruissalo boatyard. Marianne is expected to be used in the training of youth sailors at the Sailing Center and in Classic yacht races.
In the future, the boat will be converted back to its original state, as close as possible. This means a major refurbishment project in which the retrofit cabin will be removed and the hull will be rebuilt almost completely below the waterline.
